What is ADHD?
What is ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, emotional regulation, hyperactivity (mental or physical), and impulse control. While it can cause challenges in work, relationships, and self-esteem, it does not reflect a person’s intelligence. Many adults with ADHD are bright and capable, but each person experiences it differently.
Causes
The exact cause is unknown, but genetics play a strong role (70–80% heritability). Environmental factors like prenatal exposure to smoking, alcohol, pesticides, or traumatic brain injuries can also contribute.
Symptoms in Adults
Though symptoms begin in childhood, ADHD is sometimes only diagnosed in adulthood—especially in women. Stress, hormonal changes, or major life events can bring symptoms to light. Adults may not appear hyperactive, but often struggle with focus, restlessness, and impulsivity. Many mask their symptoms, which can lead to exhaustion and burnout—up to 93% of adults with ADHD experience burnout, compared to 30% of the general population.
Treatment
Treatment can include:
- Medication
- Therapy or counseling
- ADHD coaching
- Lifestyle changes (sleep, diet, exercise, mindfulness)
These approaches can help adults with ADHD manage symptoms and thrive.
